艺术家专访 | 在祁磊工作室里梦见GY!BE Exclusive Interview | Qi Lei's latest works and his playlist

初来乍到,一件素面黑色上衣和一裤子的轻松休闲,他用以黑白键上指尖触踏的轻快步伐走向前。在这初春挟带着冬季残留下来的丝丝冷冽中,祁磊的工作室,只剩下假期的味道。


悠悠地走进工作室里,满室前卫艺术乐团 Godspeed You! Black Emperor 的旋律弥漫入耳,连空气中都仿佛能看见爵士鼓打响时所扬起的烟火色尘灰。在第一小节,他俐落转身,第二小节,他将画笔敲进调色盘里,任音符在画布上肆意流淌。祁磊在分享着自己的创作过程时说道,"音乐的影响是潜移默化的,有时候不知道在那一个笔触的瞬间就留下了一个音符。"

2017年,祁磊在德玉堂画廊个展开幕后,到东南亚漂泊了几个月,拍了数千张照片。今年春天,他被关在北京工作室里,那段阳光洒满的旅行记忆一直伴随着他,激发了他的创作灵感。此次的作品延续了“潜行者”的创作理念和他的摇滚魂。而在新作释出的这个午后,德玉堂画廊准备和大家一起听祁磊说故事。

__可以跟我们分享一下这次新作的创作理念吗? __


祁磊:从2019年下半年的作品继续延续了“潜行者”个展上的作品创作理念,色彩上也更加艳丽,在作品《夏日泳池》上更是凸显的尤为强烈:宽大的蓝绿色枝叶和长方形的泳池以及珊瑚粉色彩的屋顶共处在一个日照充足的光线下带给假日游行的人们强烈的愉悦感。这种感受也同样体现在作品《度假别墅》等画面上。而到了关于“游泳”的三幅作品上,我开始对画面的色彩做出了改变,艳丽鲜亮的色彩不再是主角,色彩饱和度也开始变低,我开始寻找一个新的色彩体系的建构;题材上也从茂密的热带雨林转向山谷溪地,以及到2020年开始的新作品中的海滩棕榈树和冲浪手。色彩上的统一性逐渐开始消弱画面带来的故事性,想让观者体会到自然之后的心理隐喻,这样的表达直观地在作品《林间前的博弈》画面上。画面上两只狗在撕咬抑或是嬉戏,袒露在密集的丛林之外,我想这样的视觉语言是我想传达的人与自然的共生与矛盾,两者一直处于交错的状态,寻找一种平和。2020年的作品里也有人物的出现,尤其在《归途》这幅作品里,妇女头顶塑料制品的桌凳经过枝叶繁茂的丛林走向自己的家;左边宽大的芭蕉叶几乎等同人高,吞噬着周围的房屋。人类同自然的共生在这里体现的尤其重要。

__在你的作品中我们看到了你对色彩的运用,包含了许多的对比,想了解背后的概念和想法是什么? __

祁磊:颜色上的强烈对比:一方面从绿色到紫色、橘色到蓝色、黄色与绿色,通过这些强烈的色彩对比关系从而营造出一种燥动的心理体验,另一方面这种颜色对比也拉开了画面空间的前后关系以及色彩变化。主题上的对比:有枝繁叶茂的丛林景观,也有隐秘在丛林之后和突显在之前的人造景观,以及在自然环境中的劳作者,这几个主题画面上的变化,集中表达了人与自然景观互生的关系(包括人造景观在自然中的显现)。

__在今年的系列作品中我们看到了更多偏向稳重的色调,想知道你是如使用色彩的明暗与浓淡来体现你对情绪的理解?__


祁磊:刚刚完成的作品《Use your lllusion Ⅰ》和将要完成的作品《Use your lllusion Ⅱ》,这两件作品是对同一个图片素材两种色彩情绪表达表现最好的体现。《Use your lllusion Ⅰ》和《Use your lllusion Ⅱ》正是枪花乐队在1991年发行的最伟大的蓝橙专辑的名字,两张专辑都收录了 Don't Cry 这首歌,但是版本不同;相信如果你听过这两张专辑之后便能解答这个问题了。

__可以和我们介绍一下这次新作调色板上所使用的这些特殊颜色吗?__


祁磊:2020年之后的作品逐渐开始从艳丽的色彩丛林走向深暗色的山谷和粉灰色溪水以及深邃幽暗的绿色林间和蓝色的沙滩和紫色的棕榈树;所有这些图景在褐色、暗绿色、棕色、粉色、橙灰色、蓝色、紫色这些色彩中不断地穿梭,如大脑编辑密码组成一部打印机,获得想要的一种新的脱离现象之中的情绪色彩,这种工作方法有别于在PS软件中事先调整好一种滤镜的模式,开始与完成的过程中处于一种不确定性。

祁磊:自然环境是当下生活和工作都市里的人们对于解压方式的一个出口;我通过描绘茂密的丛林以及在其中的劳作者来反应当下的这种生活方式,从而也是对自己创作和生活的关照,它就像镜子一样。近些年应该是的。当然最早开始创作关于自然景观也是出于我创作上的瓶颈,通过出走到自然中去观看和思索我所遇到的问题,让我获得了答案。

__未来作品走向将会为何? 会一直延续油画创作吗?__


祁磊:近几年会沿着最近的思路一直延伸,我也一直在具象和抽象之间做着不同的尝试,它就像相同的歌词用不同的编曲方法带来不同的感受,最重要的是把握你想要的节奏和平衡。

__我可以理解为你的作品是对中国艺术自然传统主题的一种致敬吗?__


祁磊:其实并没有。我生活在当下,所反映的是现今生活存在的问题还有人们面对焦虑感通过拥抱自然这种生活方式去消解身心的压力和疲惫,这是我所感兴趣的点。

__最后想问问,你似乎很喜欢音乐,可以为我们分享你作画时最喜欢放的一首歌曲? 为什么会选它? 跟你的作品又什么关联?_


祁磊:黑帝 Godspeed You! Black Emperor 的曲子:Storm 总长22‘32,由四个章节组成:第一章"Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Like Antennas to Heaven..."6:15 →第二章"Gathering Storm/Il Pleut à Mourir [+Clatters Like Worry]"11:10 →第三章"'Welcome to Arco AM/PM...' [ L.A.X.; 5/14/00]"1:15→第四章"Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way"3:52。意大利导演保罗·索伦蒂诺在他的影片《Youth》中也用了这首曲子的一部分,没想到他的音乐品味这么赞。我想说的是这首曲子可以很好地带入我开始每天的工作,它能让我很快完全进入状态,第二章节舒缓地带入到另外一种意境,让我放松下来真正的投入工作;接下来的第三和第四章节就像是创作的焦灼状态以及收尾的刺激感还伴有一丝的不安定。我想把我作画时的氛围用音乐分享给你们。

Casual with a plain black top and a pair of trousers, he walked forward with a springy gait like a fingertip on a black and white key. In this early spring, there is a trace of the last winter left cold, Lei's studio, only the taste of the holiday.


Stepping into the studio, the room is filled with the melodies of the progressive rock band 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor', even in the air, you can see the dust floating up as they play the drums. In the first bar of the score, he turns away, and in the second bar, he smacks the brush into the palette and lets the notes run wild across the canvas. "The influence of the music is subtle, sometimes I don't know which moment, a brush left a note." Lei said.


In 2017, Lei drifted around Southeast Asia for a few months after his solo exhibition opened at Matthew Liu Fine Arts in Shanghai. During his time in the tropics, he took thousands of pics. Memories of those travel accompanied him during his confinement time in his Beijing studio this spring and inspired his work. The new works in 2020 continue the creative concept of "Lurker" and his rock soul. Today, the new works are released, Matthew Liu Fine Arts is going to listen to Qi Lei's story with everyone.


In his unruly character there is a law of balance

__Can you share with us the creative concept of these new works?__

Qi Lie:From work to carry on in the second half of 2019 the "secret" solo exhibition of works creation concept, color more gorgeous, also in the works of the journal summer swimming pool is highlighted particularly strong, broad green leaves and rectangular pool and coral pink color roof coexist in a sunny light bring the holiday parades, give people intense pleasure. This feeling is also reflected in the work "Holiday Villa" and other pictures. On the three works of "swimming", I began to change the color of the pictures. The gorgeous and bright color was no longer the protagonist, and the color saturation began to decrease. I began to look for the construction of a new color system. The subject matter has also shifted from lush tropical rain forests to yamagotchi, as well as beach, palm trees and surfers in new works starting in 2020. The unity in color gradually begins to weaken the story brought by the pictures, so as to let the audience experience the psychological metaphor after nature, which is intuitively expressed in the picture of the game in front of the forest. In the picture, the two dogs are biting or playing, exposing themselves in the dense jungle. I think such visual language is the symbiosis and contradiction between human and nature that I want to convey. The two are in a state of interlacing all the time, looking for a kind of peace. There are also figures in the 2020 collection, particularly in "The Journey Home", in which a woman's plastic table and stool pass through a leafy jungle to her home. On the left, the large plantain leaves are almost as tall as a human being and devour the surrounding houses. The symbiosis between man and nature is particularly important here.


__We have seen your use of color in your work, including a lot of contrast. What are the concepts and ideas behind it?__


Qi Lei:The strong contrast on color:on the one hand, from Green to Purple, Orange to Blue, Yellow and Green, through these strong color contrast relations to create a kind of psychological experience of feeling low, on the other hand, this color contrast also opened the picture space before and after relations and color changes. The contrast on the theme: there are the lush jungle landscape, the man-made landscape hidden behind the jungle and highlighted in the past, as well as the laborer in the natural environment. The changes on these themes focus on the interaction between human and the natural landscape (including the appearance of the man-made landscape in nature).


__In this year's series, we have seen more sedate tones. We want to know how do you use the shade of color to reflect your understanding of emotions?__


Qi Lei:Just finished work "Use Your IllusionⅠ" and will complete works "Use your Illusion Ⅱ", these two works are two kinds of color for the same image material best embodiment of emotional expression. "Use your Illusion Ⅰ" and "Use your Illusion Ⅱ" was issued in 1991 by GNR's greatest Blue Orange album name, both album includes Don 't Cry to this song, but the version is different; I believe you can answer this question after listening to these two albums.


__Can you tell us about the special colors you use on your palette?__


Qi Lei:After 2020, the works gradually began to move from the colorful jungle to dark valleys and pink-gray streams, as well as deep and dark green forests, blue beaches and purple palm trees. All these picture in brown, green, brown, pink, orange, gray, blue, purple constantly shuttle in each of these colors, such as the brain of edit password a printer, for want of a new kind of from the phenomenon of emotional color, this method is different from the work in the PS software in advance to adjust a filter model, the process of start and finish in a uncertainty.


__What is the role of the Nature in your work? Was it always a source of inspiration?__


Qi Lei:The natural environment is an outlet for people living and working in the city. By depicting the dense jungle and the laborers in it, I reflect the current way of life, which is also the care for my own creation and life. It is like a mirror. In recent years. Of course, I started to create natural landscapes at the earliest because of the bottleneck of my creation. By going to nature to see and think about the problems I met, I got the answer.


__What will be the direction of future works? Will you continue your oil painting?__


Qi Lei:In recent years, I have been trying different things between figurative and abstract. It is like the same lyrics with different arrangement methods to bring different feelings. The most important thing is to grasp the rhythm and balance you want.


__May I take it that your work is a tribute to the traditional theme of Chinese art (nature, landscape)?__


Qi Lei:Not really. I live in the present moment, which reflects the problems existing in today's life and how people deal with anxiety by embracing nature as a way of life to relieve physical and mental stress and exhaustion. This is what I am interested in.


__One last question, you seem to like music very much. Can you share your favorite painting song with us? How does it relate to your work?__


Qi Lei:Godspeed You! Black Emperor of the song: Storm length 22 '32, is composed of four chapters: the first chapter "Lift Yr. Italian director paolo sorrentino used part of the song in his film Youth, and didn't expect his musical taste to be so great. What I want to say is that this piece of music can bring me into my daily work very well, it can get me into a full state very quickly, the second chapter slowly brings me into another kind of mood, so that I can relax and really get into work; The third and fourth chapters that follow are like the anxious state of creation and the excitement of the ending with a little bit of instability. I want to share the atmosphere of my painting with music.
